Is There A Tradeoff between Employer-Provided Health Insurance and Wages?

چکیده

Though most of the literature in health insurance and the labor market assumes a tradeoff between employerprovided health insurance and wages, its empirical validity has not been established. Employing Current Population Survey 2004 data, this paper assesses the tradeoff hypothesis in a distributional analysis framework using stochastic dominance tests. In addition, it contributes to the previous literature by incorporating an indirect effect of health insurance on wages into the analysis. Health insurance not only directly affects wages, but also indirectly by improving individual productivity. The results confirm the existence of a tradeoff for full time working wives, and explain why the previous literature fails to do so. JEL: C12, C14, D31, I11, J3

While the experiment provide...

The Labor Market Effects of Rising Health Insurance Premiums

We estimate the effect of rising health insurance premiums on wages, employment, and the distribution of part-time and full-time work using variation in medical malpractice payments driven by the recent “medical malpractice crisis.” We estimate that a 10% increase in health insurance premiums reduces the aggregate probability of being employed by 1.2 percentage points, reduces hours worked by 2...

Premium copayments and the trade-off between wages and employer-provided health insurance.

This paper estimates the trade-off between salary and health insurance costs using data on Illinois school teachers between 1991 and 2008 that allow us to address several common empirical challenges in this literature. Teachers paid about 17 percent of the cost of individual health insurance and about 46 percent of the cost of their family members' plans through premium contributions, but we fi...

The economics of employer versus individual mandates.

This paper reviews the economic implications of employer and individual health insurance mandates. Although the cost of meeting an employer mandate is nominally paid by employers, in the long run much of the cost may be shifted backward to employees in the form of lower wages. We also compare the consequences of hypothetical employer and individual health insurance mandates for families with di...
